big ballpark in the bronx
i was out in new york for work this week, and the yankees were in the middle of a 2-week homestand. amazingly, despite decades of being a baseball fan and all those trips to new york, i'd never made it up to yankee stadium. i watched them lose the second game of a 4-game series to tampa. certainly not a yankee fan, but there are some places that every sports fan needs to spend some quality time.
most memorable moments:
- hearing the voice of bob sheppard live -- if you don't know who this is, read here.
- witnessing hundreds of girls in the 8-12 age bracket cheering "de-rek! de-rek!".
- seeing the huge number of school field trips there (it was a 1pm game) -- PS48 from brooklyn was in full effect with probably about 4 dozen kids. what a job their mentors and teachers were doing.
- checking out monument park -- the amount of history in this place is incredible.
it hasn't gotten a lot of press, but a new yankee stadium is in the works. the yankees and the city will be on the hook (financially) for everything, which could become difficult if their current woes continue. the place looks alright, i guess. as long as new yorkers are ok with it, i can't complain.
