blaaaahhhhh goes the foghorn

One of my favorite things is the Golden Gate Bridge. So often, it's shrouded in fog, and the boats coming in with goods from across the Pacific (and leaving to head out) cannot see the bridge even when they are within a few hundred feet of its towers. So, there is a system of foghorns that kicks in, which I have enjoyed listening to over the years laying in bed, going biking, or just walking around in the north and west parts of the city. Here's the detail.

And here is a cool picture of the bridge in the fog:

Wear Yellow

The most meaningful way we can have impact is to act as a role model to others. For me and for hundreds of thousands of other people around the world, Lance Armstrong does just that. On October 2, 1996, Lance was diagnosed with testicular cancer - which spread throught his body and even into his brain - and had to begin concentrating on surviving before he could think about winning.

Six Tour de France wins later -- and currently leading his 7th -- Lance has elected to retire from professional cycling in 2005. To commemorate his survivorship, dedication, and excellence, his career-long sponsor Nike has released a set of gear (in addition to the "Livestrong" bracelets that so many of us already wear, which support the Lance Armstrong Foundation). Check it out here.

We got engaged!

Amy and I got engaged this weekend here in San Francisco. I asked her to marry me (and she accepted) and Huntington Park atop Nob Hill. I asked her mom, dad, and sister to come out and celebrate the weekend (which was a surprise to Amy), so the mood of the weekend was very family-oriented and lots of fun.

After she fit the ring on her finger and said yes, we went to lunch, checked into our room at the fabulous Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill, and spent the day taking in the city. We had a fabulous dinner -- one of the best dinners I can recall having -- at Asia de Cuba, the restaurant in the Clift Hotel. The next morning the five of us were joined by my cousin, my brother, and his girlfriend at the Top of the Mark Restaurant in the Mark Hopkins hotel. That night, we went to Sunday Night Baseball at Pac Bell Park and watched the Giants lose a close 4-3 game to St. Louis. Noah Lowry pitched a gem except for a second-inning meltdown, and struck out Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonts, and Larry Walker (twice).

After the difficult week we had because of the car getting stolen, this was a great pick-me-up and a fun time for me and Amy. Next up -- planning!!!

Update on Stolen Car!

We saw the stolen car yesterday outside Kezar stadium for a brief moment, but before we could do any more than call the police, it drove off.

The roof rack had been taken off, but the license plate was still on.

The damn thing has been stolen twice now!

Getting Your Car Stolen

I found out this weekend how un-fun it is to have your car stolen.

Even though we live in a supposedly "safe" neighborhood in SF, the car was parked underneath our second-floor window as of Saturday night at 11pm, and had disappeared by 10am Sunday.

The move up from Santa Monica back to SF was supposed to be marked with lots of joy, and even though it's great to be here, this certainly puts a damper on my arrival.

If you see my silver Acura TL Type-S with a bike rack and Detroit Red Wings rear license plate frame, do give me a shout!
